Book Club Questions

I thought it might be fun to create some book club questions for Paths Unknown! So, here they are.

  1. The author originally wrote a prologue that included a series of rapid-fire scenes from Ansel and Gretchen’s growing up years. What are the pros and cons of prologues such as this? What makes the first scene of this book a good launch point for the story?
  2. In this book, Ansel pines. Do you like when characters pine for one another, or would you prefer blunt honesty?
  3. Gretchen’s father plays a large roll in this book. Did you feel that Gretchen’s feelings about her father’s abandonment and subsequent return were warranted? What other parent/child dynamics came into play?
  4. This book is a reimagining of Hansel and Gretel. What did you think of the parallels drawn by the author between the fairytale and this story?
  5. Did you read the rest of the series before this one? Do you think the reader’s experience is improved by reading the other books first, or does this story stand all on its own?
  6. “I go where you go,” is an oft repeated phrase, but did you notice that it was only said by Ansel for most of the book? Why do you think that was? What did the characters mean when they said that phrase?
  7. Hansel and Gretel is about a brother and sister, but Ansel and Gretchen are best friends. What kind of different sibling dynamics were present in this story, and how did they further the plot?
