A Little Secret About Lyri

Hello, fair readers!

Behind the Scenes

When I started plotting Tangled Sails, I knew from the beginning that I wanted my Rapunzel character to drop suddenly into Prince Eric’s ocean. The question then became, what happens next? And that’s where things felt like they really came together.

You see, as I imaged Lyrielle up in that tower—separate from the world, unable to leave, and forced to give of herself and her gift constantly—the weight of her life, her hair, and what that hair represented were so very heavy.

So when I tossed her into the middle of the ocean with all that hair…she was going to drown. There was simply no way that her hair would allow her to survive in that situation. The burden would be too much, the weight unbearable. So having Tavric come along, determined to save her from drowning, meant that he would immediately identify the problem. He knew immediately that all that hair was going to drown her, so it had to go. No hesitation, no asking permission. In that moment, he not only saves her life, but changes it entirely. Suddenly she’s freed from the thing she was told she MUST continue to carry.

And that’s just so darn relatable.

We do that to ourselves. You know we do. We drag around the expectations put on us by ourselves or by others, insisting that we must continue to carry this thing that’s not only a burden but is often a poison. We turn ourselves inside out because someone else expects it. Often, there is no ill intent, which is why it’s so hard to give up. That thing we’re doing is a “good” thing. And yet it’s the thing that’s drowning us.

Not everything is yours to carry, dear reader. Remember that.
