Mermaids and Matchmaking Cats

Hello, my lovelies!

Behind the Scenes

Let’s talk about the necessity of flexibility when it comes to writing. Like all creative processes, there will always be a need to adjust expectations and allow your art to grow so that it can transform from your intent into what it was meant to be.

I didn’t always plan to include mermaids in Tangled Sails.

Despite the fact that this story is based on both Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid, I didn’t actually intend to have any mermaids on page when I started out. Tavric and his crew would speculate about whether or not Lyri was a mermaid when they found her, and yes, Tavric believes there was a mermaid that saved him before the story started. But actually seeing mermaids in the story was not in the plans.

But plans change. Was incorporating mermaids complicated? Absolutely. Especially for me, since I’d never written a magic system before, and I had to come up with all the rules of magic, the lore of mermaids, and the mechanics of portals. This book was a challenge. A fun challenge—but a difficult one.

In the end, the mermaids ended up being a vital part of the plot, and they brought so such depth and complexity to the world that I can only be grateful for their presence.

I suppose now the question is: will they ever make another appearance in one of my books? That remains to be seen.

My Work in Progress

I’ve been very strict with myself over the past four weeks, and I’ve done a good job at making steady progress on the contemporary RomCom I’m writing. I’m at 40k words, which means if I keep up my current pace, I should have my rough draft finished in three more weeks! So if all the stars align, I could release it as early as August. (!!) The reason I’m so proud of that is that normally I would have started my next book and had a good amount of progress before I released Tangled Sails, but that wasn’t the case this time. I didn’t really get any significant progress done until a couple weeks after my release, so I was definitely behind. But I’ve made up that time, and I’m back on track! I’m at the point in the process where I am itching to get feedback from someone, but I know it’s too early. I keep telling myself to be patient; the feedback will be better if I’m farther along.

I’m super excited for y’all to meet Hadley and Liam, plus I’ll get to introduce you to the Honeybrook Inn and Sterrence—the fat, orange, matchmaking cat.
