If you’ve only been with me the past five years, you might not have even realized that I wrote contemporary. So, for anyone who was blind-sided by my sudden switch back to contemporary: you have my sympathy.
Being a pantser (a writer who writes by the seat of their pants instead of from an outline) means that I often find myself toddling along after my muse, content to go wherever it leads. Yes, I’ve forced myself into enough structure that I finished the Winberg series, but when that was done, my muse was calling me back to the land of contemporaries. And those contemporaries are where you can see my random whims play out. After all, the four that I had as part of my library before Exes came out kind of ran the gamut. Sure, they were all romance, but I had a romantic suspense (If I Could Stay), a rockstar romance (Songs for Libby), a romcom (All That Stands Between Us), and a novella about finding love through grief and dealing with the aftermath of addiction (All Our Broken Pieces).
The chaos gremlin certainly won out in that era.
And while I loved writing all my fairytale retellings, and I fully plan to write more, I needed the palate cleanser of a book where I could be as snarky as I wanted, and use as much modern slang as I wanted. Plus, the books that I gravitate toward most often are (surprise surprise) romcoms. So it only made sense.
Plus, with Sterrence the matchmaking cat pawing on my door, I really couldn’t ignore the call of Elmhurst and all its small town glory.
Still, for all my fairytale loving readers who enjoy my worlds that look vaguely renaissance if you squint real hard, I will continue to add stories to the world that I created for Tavric and Lyri in Tangled Sails. I plan to deliver both a romcom and a fairytale mashup each year until further notice.
