Just Checking In

Hi friends,

I’ll be honest with you—it’s been a hard few weeks.

We lost my mother-in-law on Wednesday. We had a lot of time to prepare for her “graduation” as she liked to call it. So instead of the shock and trauma we experienced when my father-in-law passed 22 years ago, this grief is more settled and calm. We threw her a “graduation” party several weeks before she passed. A beautiful party filled with pink decorations and attended by all her children and nearly all her grandkids. She had a throne and a crown as we gathered to sit, eat, laugh, and share all the classic stories.

If you want a little taste of her personality, you can go read (or reread) If I Could Stay. Adeline is patterned after my sweet and sassy mother-in-law. That is the one and only time I’ve ever based a character on a real person (with her permission, of course).

Needless to say, the writing, the deadlines, the to-do list—all of it has been sitting quietly in the corner this past week.

I share this not to worry you, but because I think you’ll understand, and I’m guessing all of you can relate in one way or another.

I did manage to finish plotting my next fairy-tale retelling last week, which felt like a small miracle since intense plotting has never been my strong suit. Plus, anything accomplished amidst the noise and chaos of summer is an accomplishment.

Exes & Other Unexpected Guests is still on track for August 25th, and I genuinely cannot wait to share Hadley and Liam’s story with you. It’s the kind of book I needed to write, and I hope it’s the kind of book you’ll need to read.

Thank you for being the kind of readers worth coming back to.

More soon,
Annette
